Jesus Christ Superstar

at the

Seacoast Repertory Theatre

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Directed by Craig Faulkner

Interesting observations on the casting of the four most recent shows I've seen at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre:
The Rocky Horror Show, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fame, and The Wiz. . .

Craig Faulkner:   Frank, Jesus, The Wiz, and director of RHS and JCS

King Herod:
But I thought it was the real thing. . .
You're a joke! You're not the Lord! You are nothing but a fraud!
Why you're nothing but a humbug!

Merrill Peiffer:   The Narrator, Lambchop, a signpost, and Simon Zealotes
The Narrator and Lambchop connection will make sense to anyone who has ever heard the "Do you **** dead sheep? (It's true...)" AP line.

Greg DeCandia:   Riff Raff, Peter, the Tin Man, and Nick Piazza
Riff betrays Frank. . .Peter betrays Jesus. . .The Tin Man was rather upset with the Wiz. . .

Rob Scullin:   Pontius Pilate, Evilene (The Wicked Witch of the West), RHS Head of Security
A Roman governor, a cross-dressing witch, and a techie. . .‹insert joke here›

Bill Hartery:   Dr. Scott, Annas, Mr. Sheinkopf
A German professor, a Jewish Priest, and a German professor
2 out of 3 ain't bad. . .

Andrew MacDonald:   Brad Majors, Caiaphas, Schlomo Metzenbaum
The most amazing thing about these three is that they had nothing in common, yet Andrew performed all three in the course of six shows in three days and was unrecognizable from one character to the next.

DeMond Nason:   Marvin Washington, The Cowardly Lion, Judas, Eddie
Marvin wanted supper, the Lion was scared of his supper, Judas was at the Last Supper, and Eddie was supper.

Jimmy Girgenti:   King Herod
For the final show of JCS, Jimmy came down from the stage where he was to dance and sat on Craig Faulkner's (Jesus) lap all the while singing and making rather obvious Rocky-like references to Craig's manhood.
So you are the Christ--the GREAT Jesus Christ. . .
You're the wonder of the year
I'm just dieing to be shown that you are not just any man

Of course, this all sets up Pilate's line:  Was Herod unimpressed?
